Camping with Cats: Inspiration and Beginner Tips

Adventure Cats book cover.

Taking the family pet camping might bring a dog to mind first. Camping, hiking and exploring with a cat? That was a less obvious idea to me, until I discovered Adventure Cats and Camping with Cats on Instagram.

Camping with cats is a real pastime for some enthusiastic owners and their adventurous feline companions. But the best trips begin with understanding your cat, not simply packing a tent.

Camping with Cats is dedicated to the cause of advocating for the exploration of the great outdoors with your cat. The fluffs we've grown to love as they sit on our windowsills and sofas basking in the warmth of the rays through the open blinds need to be let out. These naturally adventurous creatures deserve to feel the dirt beneath their paws, the heat from a campfire, and smell the musty awesomeness that is a worn-in tent. - Camping With Cats

That enthusiasm is lovely, but outdoor adventures are not right for every cat. There is no need to take your cat camping if they prefer familiar surroundings, and cats should always be kept away from campfires, hot surfaces and smoke.

Is camping right for your cat?

How would my cats, Fergie, Ted and Chip, respond to a wilderness retreat? With the exception of fearless Fergie, I’m not convinced that Ted and Chip would be keen to take part. Seeing other cats enjoying the outdoors made me wonder whether they had been introduced to that lifestyle gradually from an early age.

Start with your own cat’s temperament. A cat who enjoys their carrier, travels comfortably and is relaxed on supervised outings may be more suited to a camping trip than one who finds unfamiliar places overwhelming.

Try short outings close to home before considering an overnight stay. Let your cat set the pace, provide a secure place to retreat, and stop if they freeze, try to escape or show signs of distress. A quiet afternoon together can be a better adventure than a weekend they do not enjoy.

Start with harness training at home

Introduce a well-fitted cat harness in a familiar indoor space before taking it outdoors. Let your cat investigate it, reward calm behaviour and build up to wearing it for short periods. Follow the manufacturer’s fitting guidance and check that your cat cannot easily back out of it.

Once your cat is comfortable, practise with a lead indoors, then in a quiet, secure outdoor area. Never drag your cat into walking or leave them tethered unattended. Keep a secure carrier nearby so they have a familiar retreat and a safe way to travel.

What to pack for camping with cats

Familiar essentials help you maintain your cat’s routine away from home. Before setting off, pack:

  • A secure carrier: use it for transport and keep it available as a familiar retreat.
  • A cat harness and lead: check the fit and condition before each outing.
  • Their usual food and fresh water: bring bowls and enough supplies for the trip, rather than relying on unfamiliar food or natural water sources.
  • Litter supplies: bring a portable tray, their usual litter and bags for disposing of waste appropriately. For options to consider before your trip, explore our guide to sustainable cat litter.
  • Familiar bedding: a blanket that smells like home can make the sleeping area feel more familiar.
  • Identification and emergency details: check that their microchip contact details are current, and save the details of a nearby veterinary clinic.

Do not assume a tent will securely contain a cat. Plan how you will prevent escapes whenever doors or zips are opened, and never leave your cat alone in a vehicle or tent.

Choose a suitable campsite

Ask the campsite directly whether cats are permitted. A dog-friendly listing does not necessarily mean cats are welcome, and individual sites may have restrictions or conditions.

Look for a quiet setting with shelter and space away from busy paths and unfamiliar dogs. Check the weather forecast and avoid trips during extreme heat, cold or severe weather. Keep your cat supervised and prevent them from approaching or hunting wildlife.

In New Zealand, check the rules for the specific campsite and any surrounding conservation areas before travelling. Choose a different destination if pets are not permitted, and dispose of litter and waste responsibly.

A book for further inspiration

If the idea of camping with your cat appeals, Adventure Cats by Laura J. Moss is a book to explore for inspiration on taking cats outdoors. The Adventure Cats website is another starting point for discovering this world.

For me, the appeal is sharing something new with a pet who genuinely enjoys it. Whether that means a campsite or a short, supervised outing near home, your cat’s comfort should come first.
