Dog Love Cookies: My Stodola Dog Rolling Pin Review

Stodola wooden rolling pin engraved with dog breeds above dog-patterned cookies on a cooling rack.

First up, let’s just take a moment to admire my (freakin awesome!) new rolling pin. Made in Poland by Stodola, this laser-cut engraved rolling pin features a medley of different dog breeds. I love it!

If you love dogs and baking, a dog-patterned rolling pin is a fun way to bring the two together. These are cookies for the human dog lovers in your life, rather than a dog-treat recipe.

A dog-patterned rolling pin for animal lovers

Stodola had heaps of designs to choose from when I picked mine, including a good selection of dog-breed-specific pins, some very awesome cat rolling pins, as well as some farmyard creatures. Their pig pin was exceptionally cute!

As we had a three-year-old’s birthday party to host that week, what better time to test out my new favourite kitchen accessory and treat the little lovelies? I even whipped up a separate, special batch for the pooches.

My first bake with the Stodola rolling pin

So after the first cookie run with my new Stodola rolling pin, what did I think of it? It’s awesome! With almost no effort, it made ordinary cookies so much more special. It’s an easy, fuss-free way to add some personality to your baking, and I was really happy with the results.

I was concerned that cookie dough could get caught in the pattern and ‘munt’ the overall design, so I dusted the pin and the cookie dough with icing sugar first. That worked a treat!

My tip for using an engraved rolling pin

The little dog details are the whole appeal, so keeping dough from sticking in the grooves is worth a bit of attention. My icing sugar trick helped the pattern come through without dough getting caught in the pin.

If you’re trying an embossed rolling pin for the first time, test it on a small piece of your dough before decorating the whole batch. That gives you a chance to see how the pattern looks and adjust your dusting as needed. This post is a review of my first bake, not a cookie recipe, so follow your chosen recipe for ingredients, baking temperature and timing.

The verdict: more dog cookies, please!

My then-three-year-old Eliza loved the dog imprints so much she suggested that we also needed a rolling pin “with all the cats”. I expected requests for a fresh batch of “dog cookies” to become a regular occurrence!

For a little more feline charm in the kitchen, these handmade ceramic cat magnets are pretty lovely too.

For me, the appeal is simple: familiar baking, with a little extra dog-loving personality. An engraved rolling pin is also a lovely gift idea for someone who enjoys baking and has a soft spot for animals.
